Tewkesbury Safer Roads and Community 20s – Press Statement from Gloucestershire County Council
Tuesday 8 September 2026 Residents invited to help shape safer roads in Tewkesbury and surrounding areas Residents, businesses and communities in Tewkesbury and surrounding areas are being asked to share their views on new proposals to introduce lower speed limits across the area.

The plans form part of Gloucestershire County Council’s Safer Roads and Community 20s programme and aim to create safer streets by reducing speeds where people are most at risk.
The proposals cover Tewkesbury and surrounding areas, including Northway, Wheatpieces and Ashchurch Rural, and would introduce more consistent speed limits across these communities. Most urban and residential streets are proposed to become 20mph, particularly in areas where people live, shop, travel locally and spend time with family and friends.
Alongside this, lower speed limits are proposed on some higher-speed roads approaching Tewkesbury. Together, the changes aim to reduce the risk of collisions and support more sustainable travel choices.
In some locations, existing 30mph and 40mph speed limits would remain where they are considered appropriate and are working effectively.
The proposals are being brought forward as part of the first tranche of locations within the Safer Roads and Community 20s programme. Over the past five years, 250 road traffic casualties have been recorded in the area, with 27 per cent classed as killed or seriously Injured.
Public engagement is now open and will run until midnight on Sunday 11 October.

If there is community support, a formal Traffic Order consultation will be launched in autumn 2026, with any approved changes expected to be introduced in mid-2027.

These proposals are about reducing speeds where it matters most, helping to prevent collisions and creating environments where people feel safer to walk, wheel and cycle.
